The crypto market today is best understood through five numbers, not one price. Check them in this order and you will know whether the day is calm, bullish or dangerous.
The five data points
- Bitcoin’s move over the last 24 hours.
- Total liquidations over the same window.
- The Fear and Greed reading, covered in our explainer.
- Bitcoin dominance, explained in this guide.
- US fund flows for Bitcoin and Ether.
Reading them together
Falling price with huge liquidations and extreme fear is a forced-selling day, which often reverses fast. Falling price with calm liquidations and steady fund outflows is a slow bleed, which can last longer.
Crypto liquidations today
Crypto liquidations today tell you how violent the market has been. A normal day sees a few hundred million dollars liquidated across all coins. A figure in the billions marks a forced-selling or squeeze day.
If you are new to the term, start with What Are Crypto Liquidations?.
Long versus short liquidations
Long liquidations happen when price falls. Short liquidations happen when price rises. Which side is larger tells you which way traders were crowded.
Where to find the numbers
Public dashboards aggregate exchange data. We cite the source and the time window in each story so you can check the figure yourself.
Crypto Fear and Greed Index
The Crypto Fear and Greed Index rates market mood from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed). It is published daily by Alternative.me and combines several inputs such as price volatility, momentum and trading volume, social media activity, Bitcoin dominance and search trends.
How traders use it
Extreme fear has often appeared near local lows, and extreme greed near local highs. It is a mood gauge, not a signal to trade on alone.
Limits
The score is built from past data and can stay at an extreme for weeks in a strong trend.
Bitcoin dominance
Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin’s share of the total crypto market value. If total crypto is worth 100 and Bitcoin is worth 60, dominance is 60 percent.
Rising versus falling
Rising dominance means money is moving into Bitcoin, usually in fear, and altcoins lag. Falling dominance with rising prices often marks an altcoin season, when smaller coins outperform.
Limits of the number
Stablecoins count in the total, so dominance can fall in a crash simply because stablecoins grow as a share.
Crypto events this week
Crypto events this week usually fall into four groups: US economic releases, central bank meetings, token-specific dates and exchange announcements.
Fed meeting and crypto
Interest rate decisions change the cost of borrowing. Higher rates tend to hurt risky assets, so Bitcoin often moves within minutes of the announcement and again when the chair speaks.
CPI and crypto
The consumer price index measures inflation. A reading above forecasts raises rate expectations and can push crypto down. A reading below forecasts has the opposite effect.
Token and exchange dates
Unlock calendars, delistings and new listings are announced in advance by projects and exchanges.
